Why we serve

Not to be seen. Because we were seen first.

Service isn't how we get God to like us — He already does. It's the natural overflow of people who've been met by grace. Three convictions shape everything we do.

We follow a Servant King

Jesus washed feet. The greatest in His kingdom is the one who serves. We're not above a broom, a meal line, or a hard conversation.

Mark 10:45

Every person bears God's image

The student eating alone, the man under the bridge, the kid who's behind in reading — each carries infinite worth. We serve people, not projects.

Genesis 1:27

Do good to everyone

Especially the household of faith — but not only. We love our campus and our city the same way: freely, consistently, with no strings attached.

Galatians 6:10

What a serve day looks like

A Saturday, hour by hour

Never served before? Here's exactly what to expect. No experience needed — just show up.

8:30 AM

Coffee & gather

Meet at Price Center West. Donuts, name tags, and a quick hello. You'll never be the only new face.

8:50 AM

Devotion & prayer

Five minutes in Scripture and prayer. We serve from a full heart, not an empty tank.

9:15 AM

Carpool to the site

Teams of 6–8 head out together. Great conversations happen in the car.

9:45 AM

Serve

The main event — packing, building, cleaning, tutoring, or talking with neighbors. Led by the partner org.

12:30 PM

Lunch & reflect

Tacos together and a few minutes to share what God stirred. Home by early afternoon.

We don't do this alone

We come alongside local churches and nonprofits who've served San Diego faithfully for years. They lead; we follow.

After-serve reflection

“I came to carry boxes. I left having prayed with a freshman who'd been crying in her car. God set that up.”

“The man at the shelter knew more Scripture than me. I came to give and ended up receiving.”

“Three hours of sorting cans doesn't feel spiritual until you remember whose hands are doing it.”

Reflection

Serving changes the server

We always close a serve day by writing down one thing we saw God do. Over a year, those pages become a record of grace — and a reminder that we never serve alone.

Each volunteer keeps a simple journal — paper or app, your call.

We share highlights at small group the following week.

Reflection turns one-off service into lasting formation.

In their words

Stories from the field

“I was a skeptic who only came because my roommate dragged me to a beach cleanup. The way these people loved strangers made me curious about Jesus. A year later I'm leading a team.”

DKDaniel K.Sixth College · Junior

“Tutoring the same kid every week for two years taught me more about faithfulness than any sermon. He reads now. I cried at his graduation.”

PAPriya A.Warren College · Senior

“The Tijuana build trip wrecked me in the best way. We finished a home for a family of six in 48 hours. I'll never complain about my dorm again.”

MRMarcus R.Revelle College · Sophomore

“I serve at the food bank between classes. It's the one hour a week that reminds me my degree is meant to bless people, not just my own résumé.”

JLJenny L.Muir College · Junior

“As an international student I felt invisible my first quarter. Serving move-in day let me be the welcome I never got. Now it's my favorite weekend of the year.”

Rooted in Scripture

Where this comes from

Service isn't a program we invented — it runs from Genesis to Revelation. Explore four passages that anchor how we love our city.

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45

Jesus flips the world's ladder. Greatness flows downward into service. Before we ever serve anyone, we remember the One who served us first — to the point of the cross.

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Matthew 25:40

When we feed the hungry and welcome the stranger, we're not just doing nice things — we're meeting Jesus Himself, hidden in the face of the overlooked.

“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

James 2:17

We're not saved by works — but real faith always works. Love that stays in the head and never reaches the hands isn't the love the Bible describes.

“He has shown you what is good… to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Micah 6:8

Justice, mercy, humility — not as a checklist, but as a way of walking with God through an ordinary week in San Diego.

Good questions

Before you sign up

Not at all. Plenty of people serve with us while still figuring out what they believe. Come as you are — there's no quiz at the door, just good work and good people.

Yes. Many projects are a single 2–3 hour Saturday with no ongoing commitment. Start there. If it grabs your heart, weekly options are waiting.

Often, yes. We can sign off on verified service hours for many courses and programs. Mention it when you sign up and we'll track it for you.

For off-campus projects we organize carpools from Price Center. No car needed — just let us know when you register so we can save you a seat.

Never. We'll pray and share honestly about why we serve, but you're free to listen, ask, or simply work alongside us. No pressure, ever — that's a promise.

Your next step

Come serve with us

Tell us a little about you and we'll match you with a project that fits your time and heart. No commitment — just a first yes.
