Discipleship at UC San Diego — 2:14

“And the things you have heard from me… entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.” — 2 Timothy 2:2

What is Discipleship?

Following Jesus is not a solo climb

Discipleship begins with Jesus' invitation: "Follow Me." To be a disciple is to apprentice your whole life to Christ — learning to think, love, and live the way He did. It is not a program you complete, but a relationship you grow into over a lifetime.

We grow best in community. Iron sharpens iron. Through mentorship, small groups, and honest friendships, you'll be known, challenged, encouraged, and held accountable. No one matures in isolation — we walk the road together.

The goal is maturity and multiplication. As you are formed by the Word and the Spirit, you become equipped to disciple others. Every disciple is called to make disciples — that's how the gospel moves through a campus and across generations.

Wherever you are, there is a next step. Whether you just gave your life to Christ or you've walked with Him for years, our tracks meet you where you are and move you forward — from new believer to mature leader.

Growth Milestones

Discipleship is a journey with visible markers. These are the seven milestones we celebrate as you grow from a new believer into a disciple-maker.

01

Assurance of Salvation

You know — beyond doubt — that you belong to Christ, sealed by His Spirit and secure in His love.

Born again & assured
02

Daily Devotion

A consistent rhythm of Scripture and prayer becomes the heartbeat of your day, not a duty.

Rooted in the Word
03

Planted in Community

You're known and committed — serving in a small group, attending gatherings, and building real friendships.

Belonging & accountable
04

Character Formed

The fruit of the Spirit grows visibly — patience, integrity, and love shape how you live on campus.

Christlike character
05

Hide His Word in Your Heart

Scripture Memorization

A disciple is shaped by the truth they carry. We memorize Scripture together — one verse a week — so that God's Word becomes the first voice you hear in temptation, doubt, and decision.

Stories From the Journey

Discipleship is best understood in the faces of those it has shaped. Here's what God has been doing in our students.

"I came to UCSD a skeptic. My mentor patiently walked through every question I had. Two years later, I'm leading a Life Group of my own."

Good Questions

Questions, Answered

Wondering where to start or what discipleship really involves? Here are the things students ask us most.

Still have a question? Our discipleship team would love to talk.

Do I need to be a Christian to join?

Not at all. Many students begin exploring while still asking big questions. Our "First Steps" track and mentors are a safe place to investigate faith honestly — no pressure, no judgment.

How much time does discipleship take?

Most students invest a weekly mentor meeting (about an hour) plus their Life Group. Beyond that, your daily rhythms with God are yours to shape. We help you build a sustainable pace, not burnout.

Who will my mentor be?

We match you with a trained, vetted mentor — often an upperclassman, grad student, or staff member — based on your stage of life, schedule, and field of study. You can request a different match anytime.

Is there a cost to participate?

Discipleship tracks and mentorship are completely free. Retreats and some events have optional, subsidized fees — and scholarships are always available so cost is never a barrier.

Can I become a mentor myself?

Yes — that's the goal! After growing through the tracks, the "Multiply" track equips you to disciple others. Mentoring is the natural overflow of being discipled well.
