From twelve students in a dorm room to a national movement of believers integrating faith with intellect — this is how Watch Altars began, and where God is taking it next.
It Started With a Question
In the fall of 2014, a small group of UC San Diego students kept asking the same thing: why does the university so often treat faith and reason as enemies? They were studying neuroscience, engineering and physics by day — and wrestling with the supremacy of Christ by night.
Rather than choose between their minds and their faith, they decided to build a place where both could thrive. They named it Watch Altars — a call to keep the fire burning on the altar, to stay watchful, and to worship God with everything, including the intellect He gave them.

Milestones of Grace
The First Altar
Twelve students begin weekly prayer and Scripture study in a Revelle College dorm.
Faith Meets Intelligence
The first Faith & Sciences forum draws 300 students; apologetics becomes a hallmark.
Worship & Outreach
Monthly worship nights and the first campus service projects launch.
Going National
Chapters reach 10 universities; the national council and governing documents are established.
Beyond the Campus
First short-term mission teams deploy; the Watch Altars ecosystem takes shape.

Why “Watch”?
To watch is to stay spiritually awake — alert in prayer, discerning in mind, and ready for what God is doing in this generation. “Watch and pray,” Jesus said. We take Him seriously.
Why “Altars”?
An altar is a place of surrender and continual worship. We believe every campus, lab and lecture hall can become an altar where lives are offered fully to Christ.
